“Terrence?” Anatole asked.

“Magic. He had magic. I threw up a defense,” Terrence explained quickly.

“I saw. I am glad. Sam?” he asked.

“I’m okay,” said the driver. “Something caught up to them on their way through us.”

“A werewolf. I saw it,” said Anatole. The Escalade was already out of view, but he had a decent look before it disappeared. “That was Murphy, and I think another of Christian’s vehicles. I didn’t see his companion’s face. A woman, it seemed?”

“Behind us,” warned Jan, seated beside Anatole. They heard the engine as the words left Jan’s mouth, and saw the light. The motorcycle blew past them a heartbeat later, rushing on after the Escalade. “That looked like Killer Six,” said Jan.

Anatole looked past Terrence to the driveway. Only ambient light from the neighbors and the starry sky lit the house. Emerald Shadow stepped into view with her hands up, but her motion spoke less of peace than frustration. “Hey, what the hell?” the assassin called out.

“Boss?” Terrance prompted.

The house stood with its gate and garage open and not a guard in sight. The thief was already in flight and under pursuit. Anatole’s face darkened. “Follow them.”

Tires squealed as the Mercedes straightened and took off. Emerald Shadow stood in its wake, with only the pair of her daggers that had fallen loose from the Escalade’s door when it hit Anatole’s vehicle. She threw back her hoodie on her way to the gate, scowling at the tail lights disappearing down the curve. “That’s fine, go!” she shouted. “Don’t even say hi! I’m still billing for this!”
